In August 2009, the academic health science centers, responding to faculty-generated initiative, formed the SUNY Eye Institute (SEI) a consortium of the vision researchers from all four academic medical universities in the SUNY system (Downstate, Upstate, Stony Brook and Buffalo) and the SUNY College of Optometry. This group of investigators represents over 45 laboratories making strides against blinding diseases.

In July 2009, responding to a faculty-generated initiative, the presidents of the academic health centers formed the SUNY Eye Institute, a consortium of vision research from their five component universities with the MISSION:

To integrate the complementary strengths of the four SUNY Medical Universities and SUNY Optometry into a single SUNY Eye Institute (SEI) in order to enhance research and training in clinical and basic visual sciences in New York State. Goals are to (1) develop pre- and postdoctoral training programs in eye and vision research across the five schools, (2) recruit basic and clinical investigators into eye and vision research, (3) promote and foster collaborative research interactions among vision scientists across the schools and (4) establish state-of-the-art eye research core facilities at each of the campuses to serve and augment the capabilities of all five schools.
